Philipps-Universität Marburg Zentrum für Synthetische Mikrobiologie - Synmikro

SYNMIKRO was established in 2010 as a joint enterprise between Philipps University of Marburg and the Max-Planck Institute for terrestrial Microbiology, funded through a grant of the LOEWE excellence research initiative of the State of Hessen, as a first center for Synthetic Microbiology in Germany and one of the first in the world. More than 150 scientists at SYNMIKRO are currently conducting interdisciplinary research in around 43 research groups - from the Philipps University (from 7 different faculties), Max-Planck Institute for terrestrial Microbiology, Justus-Liebig University of Giessen and the newly established Microcosm Earth Center. Research at SYNMIKRO is covering a broad range of topics: from structural biology and biochemistry over microbial physiology and molecular, cellular, systems and synthetic microbiology to microbial ecology and host-microbe interactions. Besides addressing fundamental principles and functions of microbial cells, researchers at SYNMIRKO are quantitatively characterizing the dynamic interplay of cellular components with the aim to build synthetic systems as novel tools for basic research and for biotechnology.
