In April 2021, the EU Commission noted in a study, among other things, "that new GM products have the potential to contribute to sustainable agri-food systems in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Farm-to-Fork strategy." Other products produced using biotechnology are also more sustainable than conventional alternatives. Indeed, biotechnology and genetic engineering pay toward many of the United Nations' 17 overall Sustainable Development Goals. Yet genetic engineering is still excluded from sustainable funds. How can this apparent contradiction be overcome. What needs to happen for biotech to be perceived as green enough for green investing and how can start-ups benefit?
